BOM Updating Manually
Currently in the system is it configured where a technician consumes a part, it is added automatically into the BOM of the equipment asset. I believe this function should be taken off. This often muddies up the BOMs where any small thing that can be consumed on an asset is added, where eventually a BOM can have 100, 200 etc line items. Moreover, when an item is updated and/or retrofitted, it will add that item but also have kept the previous item as well. If another person or technician goes into a BOM and looks for a part (Example motor) and finds that the BOM is listing 3 different motors for example, then they would have to go back out to the equipment and verify which motor it is and then come back to check if it is in stock. Overall, it defeats the purpose of a BOM then if it isn't a complete accurate reference point. This would mean an individual such as engineer, SCS, Planner etc would have to go into each BOM periodically and audit what is accurate or not.
I think having this many individuals having access to change/adjust the BOM becomes a problem especially when there isn't a check or balance. Having this function off will make sure that BOMs are reliable and only changed by people who it is in their job plan (Planner, SCS, Engineer etc) manually.
The current configuration was originally designed to ensure asset records don't remain empty, given that manual maintenance across every asset isn't scalable with our current resources, while also preserving cross-site visibility of parts history. Because this touches core operational workflows and historical site practices, any decision to alter this setup or to establish a formal auditing process requires review and alignment with leadership. We will continue to evaluate.
